Dengue & Chikungunya Prevention: Keep Mosquitoes Away! ??

With Chikungunya and Dengue fever cases rising globally, vigilance is essential as the new semester begins. As of August 24 this year, Taiwan has confirmed 134 Dengue cases—including 7 local cases (all in Kaohsiung City) and 127 imported cases, mostly from Southeast and South Asian countries such as Indonesia (26), Vietnam (26), and the Maldives (16).

Both Chikungunya and Dengue are transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus). The incubation period ranges from 2 to 12 days.

Common Symptoms:

  • Sudden high fever

  • Joint pain or arthritis (which may persist for weeks or even months)

  • Headache, fatigue, or muscle aches

  • Nausea, vomiting, or skin rashes

High summer temperatures combined with frequent rainfall create ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes in standing water. To prevent outbreaks on campus, please follow these guidelines:

  • Eliminate Breeding Sites: Practice the "Inspect, Empty, Clean, and Scrub" routine. Always check and clear standing water around dorms and campus areas within 48 hours after rain.

  • Self-Health Monitoring: If you traveled to affected regions during the break and experience any symptoms, seek medical care immediately and inform the doctor of your travel history.

  • Prompt Reporting: Notify the Health Center right away if you experience symptoms or suspect an infection to help prevent campus clusters.
